Methods of Use
Having a professional Aromatherapy massage is a wonderfully relaxing and therapeutic treatment using essential oils. This is not always an option for everyone, however, as there may not be the time available or the cost could be prohibitive. To enjoy the benefits of essential oils there are many other options available:

Aromatherapy burners can be used in the bedroom, half an hour before going to sleep, using relaxing and calming oils, remember to blow out the tea light before getting into bed. They can be used in a study or workroom to burn oils that are thought to aid memory and reduce tiredness. Oils can be burned to cleanse a room with stale odours or after illness to freshen the air.

Candles that incorporate essential oils can be bought from many sources, specialist shops and salons, the home ware departments of large stores, gift shops, chemists, health shops and many more.

Ceramic rings that may be placed on a source of gentle heat such as a light bulb. A few drops of essential oils are dropped into the well of the ring which is placed facing upwards over a cold light bulb. When the light is switched on the gentle heat produced will diffuse the aroma of the oils gently into the room. They should not be used on bulbs over 70 watts, when purchasing a ceramic ring always follow the manufacturers instructions for safe use.

Compress may be applied to a small area such as a grazed knee or an aching joint or sore muscle. A small towel soaked in hand hot water containing a couple of drops of essential oil will help to soothe the area treated.

Herbal heat packs, which contain blends of aromatic herbs may be heated in a microwave following the manufacturers instructions, they provide moist heat allowing the essential oils to be absorbed into the skin as well as the aroma being inhaled.

Directly on to the skin. There are not many essential oils that can be applied directly as they may cause irritation, however, lavender can be used directly onto the skin and is massaged into the forehead and temple to help alleviate headaches and into the lower back and abdomen to alleviate menstrual pain. Tea tree oil may be used as an anti bacterial agent

Dry inhalation on a handkerchief, a couple of drops of lavender on a handkerchief or other calming oil is useful to inhale in moments of stress. Also uplifting oils to revive or improve mood.

Facial steamer or inhalation. Therapists are incorporating essential oils into facial steam treatments and into the Aroma spa body treatment when the client sits in a portable steam unit which contains essential oils so benefiting from the effects of the heat treatment as well as the absorption of essential oils.

Foot spa. Many manufacturers of foot care products now use essential oils as an ingredient in pedicure products, anti fungal and antibacterial esential oils can be incorporated into the foot spa as well as calming or uplifting oils.

Fragrance bowl of warm water or pot pourri containing blends of essential oils.

Hair care products, many shampoos contain essential oils for their beneficial effects on different hair types.

Humidifier may have a couple of drops of oil added to help freshen or fragrance the atmosphere.

Insect Repellent - Many essential oils including citronella, lavender, and peppermint act as a natural repellent against insects. Sprinkle a few drops of essential oil onto tissues or cotton balls and place near your doorways and windows to help repel insects. Be sure to read all safety information provided with the oils you are using. Some may not be suitable for use around pets and be careful not to apply the essential oil directly onto any fragile surfaces.

In the bath diluted in a small amount of vegetable oil or full fat milk so they are evenly dispersed in the water.

In the car many air fresheners now incorporate essentials oils or aromas that are uplifting and counteract tiredness.
- Sauna, adding essential oils to help the sinuses or respiration, cleansing or relaxation. Care must be taken when in a communal sauna that oils are not used that may irritate others, so if you are intending to use them you must seek permission first and use as directed by a professional.

Skin care products with specific blends chosen to treat skin types and conditions. There are several beauty companies who base their products entirely on essential oil blends in face and body creams, suncare and massage oils.

Tea infusions are available from natural food companies and also in many supermarkets using essential oils that aid digestion such as peppermint or aid sleep such as chamomile.
