Reflexology

882275_reflexology luissolisReflexology is a non-invasive natural therapy, which will help to alleviate stress and tension and produce a general feeling of well being. Pressure manipulations of varying degrees are applied to the hands, feet or ears working on specific points that correspond to particular areas of the body. Reflexology is an holistic treatment as the reflexologist treats the whole person, body, mind and spirit, to induce a state of balance, stimulating the body's own potential to heal both physically and emotionally.  The different systems of the body are interdependent and they rely on each other for maintaining good health. When these systems are working well, the body is in a state of balance, with a good energy flow. However when this energy flow is interrupted for any reason, this creates an imbalance and upsets homeostasis.

HOMEOSTASIS literally means 'same state'.

It is the ability or tendency of an organism or cell to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological processes. It is a process, which keeps the internal body condition constant. All cells are surrounded by tissue fluid, which maintains the right conditions for the cells to work effectively. It has the right temperature, the right amount of glucose and the right amounts of water and salt. Homeostasis is the process that maintains these conditions at the right level.

Reflexology helps the body in maintaining homeostasis as it is based on the principle that there are reflex zones in the feet, which are linked by energy pathways to corresponding parts of the body and when the pressure is applied, it stimulates the movement of energy along these pathways. It also relaxes the client, improves circulation thus speeding up the elimination of waste products and stimulates the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, from the pituitary gland.

Reflexology has been used for centuries in many parts of the world. There is archaeological evidence in Egypt, China and Japan, however in the West, the concept of reflexology emerged in the 19th century.

Generally the benefits of this treatment have to do with the reduction of stress. The first treatment I ever had was a revelation as I felt as light as a feather and as though I was walking 2 inches off the ground! It is relaxing and calming to both mind and body. Reflexology is under constant investigation and scientific study to understand how it works as it complements standard medical care but should NEVER replace it.

A reflexology session generally lasts from 30 - 60 minutes and the reflexologist will carry out a detailed consultation prior to any treatment.
