       W

 

  •  Wart – a small rough benign tumour found typically on the hands and feet. Caused by a viral infection, usually disappearing after a few months but in some cases last for a few years.
  • Watt - a unit of electrical power equal to one joule per second
  • Waxing - a temporary method of hair removal, cool, warm or hot wax may be used
  • Wet area - this is the area of a spa or salon that has water treatments, such as jacuzzis, whirlpools, saunas, steam baths, pressure showers etc
  • Whirlpool - Large tub with high pressure jets situated around the inside and on the bottom. It contains hot water and the jets massage the muscles and relax the body They may accomodate up to eight people at a time depending on the capacity
  • Winged scapulae - describe the position of the scapulae (shoulder blades) when the vertebral borders protrude outwards and resemble wings. More noticable on thinner people
  • Wringing – a massage movement classified as petrissage. The tissue is lifted away from the bone using both hands and then pressed between the thumb of one hand and the fingers of the other alternately in a wringing motion.
  • Wrinkles – a natural effect of ageing on the skin, they look like folds in the skin and are caused by loss of collagen and elastin, lack of moisture and reduced fat in the subcutaneous layer
