Time Management

It could be said that effective time management is just an experience in self - discipline.

All managers should be able to improve their own efficiency and effectiveness, through good time management. This will then serve as an example to all their employees who in turn will become more productive. Inefficient methods of work and poor time management are often difficult to change, but with commitment this is possible. It has been proved that it only takes six weeks for new behaviours to become habit, therefore improvements can be seen and results achieved very quickly. To evaluate how well you are managing your time ask yourself the following questions :

Question Yes No Rarely
Do you feel as though there are never enough hours in the day
Are you spending your time doing the things you don’t want to do
Do you constantly feel stressed at work
Do you sometimes feel out of control of your work
Do you work more hours than others in a similar position
Do you feel guilty if you leave early
Do you regularly take your work home
Do you feel dissatisfied in your job
Are there any jobs, that you avoid doing

Do you take less holiday than you are entitled to

Are you unable to find free time, when required

Assess your answers carefully and if you constantly answer yes then it is time to evaluate your personal time management and focus on the areas you can improve. This will help to reduce stress at work, improve your efficiency and allow you to enjoy your work more.

The rest of this chapter deals with different methods of improving your own time management and that of your staff.
