Concealer

As the name suggests this makeup product is used to hide imperfections, blemishes or uneven colour on the skin. Blemishes may include, spots, scars, broken veins, dark patches, birthmarks or under eye discolouration.

It should be used when foundation does not provide sufficient cover and can be applied over or under the foundation.

Concealers come in several forms

  •  Pencil
  •  Wand and brush
  •  Cream
  •  Liquid
  •  Compact

They are a thicker consistency than foundation so should be used sparingly. The texture is important as if it is too oily it will not cover well as it slides over the skin when applied.

If it is too dry and chalky in consistency it will provide a heavy caked finish which looks unnatural and may emphasise the blemish.

Some concealers contain light reflecting particles that help to minimise imperfections.

There are several shades to choose from and they should be chosen to match the foundation colour and blend naturally. If the wrong colour is chosen it may actually emphasise the blemish you are trying to hide.

A shade or two lighter will help to hide dark circles and unwanted shadows e.g. the deep lines from the sides of the nose to the sides of the mouth.

Concealers can be used just to correct colour problems e.g. redness can be toned down with a green corrector, a sallow complexion can be brightened with a lilac corrector.

Creamy liquid concealer is suitable for all skin types and under eye circles as it blends well with foundation.

Liquid concealer is best for dry skin, using a gentle pat and blend technique with your ring finger.

Pencils and sticks are easy to transport and use for a quick ‘touch up'
